It didn’t get much better after the break, Procter (89) handed Monty Panesar a deserved second wicket, but with the support of Maharoof (29) and skipper Glen Chapple (35*), Lancashire compiled a massive 590 all out.
In reply, Sussex started calmly; Chris Nash and Ed Joyce seeing off the new ball. But after only 12 overs, Gary Keedy was introduced into the Lancashire attack and although he didn’t take the first wicket, things started to happen when he was involved. Firstly, Chris Nash (12) missed a straight Maharoof delivery, then Keedy got one to turn fairly viciously and it beat the bat of Ed Joyce (21).
Wells, on the back of a match winning hundred, started excellently driving both Maharoof and Keedy down the ground for four. He continued to express himself, skipping down the wicket to the spinner, driving him for another early boundary. Wells, together with Goodwin, settled things down for the home side but not without a few scares; Goodwin’s edge just evaded Mark Chilton and Luke Wells missed a drive that nearly had him cleaned bowled. Wells then left a Keedy delivery alone, and unfortunately for him it hit his pad plumb in front, he was out for 18. It got worse for Sussex as Ben Brown was then trapped in front LBW to Chapple for just 7.
Murray Goodwin (14*) and Amjad Khan (3*) saw Sussex through to the close of play, as the home side ended on 97-4 – trailing by 493 runs.
